Garage Door Repairs: 3 Solutions for Silencing a Noisy Garage Door

Posted on

Your once quiet garage door might be acting up recently and making a lot of noise when opening and closing. Even if you can stand the noise, you should still make an effort to silence your garage door, as the noise is generally an indication that your garage door is put in conditions that result in premature wear. If you can't get the garage door to quiet down, you should contact a garage door technician; however, until then, here are 3 solutions you can try.

Tighten All of the Screws and Bolts

The ruckus coming from your garage door might be coming from loose screws and bolts. Vibrations from regular usage can cause screws and bolts holding the various parts together to come loose with time. If the noise sounds like metal clashing with metal, see if tightening all of the screws and bolts solves the problem. If you notice that some of the screws and bolts can't tighten completely, replace them.

Lubricate the Tracks and the Rollers

Friction from the contact between the tracks and the rollers can cause a grinding or screeching type of noise. This generally means that the tracks and rollers are not properly lubricated. If you don't correct the problem, the tracks and the rollers will eventually warp in shape and will need to be replaced prematurely. You should clean the tracks and rollers to remove any lubricant that has dried or any dirt and dust that has accumulated on the surfaces before applying a lubricant of your choice.

Straighten Up the Tracks

The annoying banging sounds might also be caused by tracks that have warped in shape or gotten bent out of shape from regular garage door use. Inspect the tracks closely. Use a rubber hammer to straighten areas of the tracks that might be distorted. Be careful when hammering the tracks back to their original shape. You want to use as little force as possible to avoid causing further damage.

In the event that nothing you do quiets the garage doors, there's a good chance that something else is the problem. You should have a professional inspect the garage door to make sure that there aren't any problems that need to be addressed and fixed immediately. These problems might be a severe threat to the health and condition of the garage doors. If left alone, they might cause your garage doors to become worn down prematurely.
